Accessibility statement
We build all of our websites and applications according to modern accessibility standards. We want all visitors and users to feel welcome and find the experience rewarding.
Our values and beliefs
- Accessibility can also be thought of as Inclusive Design- experiences that welcome people of varying needs and abilities.
- “ADA Compliance,” as a binary, does not truly exist. The ADA was written before the web, and thus many of our standards today are our best interpretations of inclusivity.
- Inclusive Design is a way of building, rather than a solution applied as an afterthought or wide-brush effort. There are no silver-bullet solutions.
- Accessibility isn’t a permanent achievement. Our industry must grow with emerging or changing human needs.
- Accessibility is not just for a small percentage of people. Inclusive principles help everyone.
- There is no “Us vs. Them” when it comes to accessibility. At various points in our lives, we all will experience the need for accommodations, even if temporary ones.
Our practices
We build according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and more user-friendly for everyone.
WCAG 2.1 has three levels of accessibility (A, AA and AAA). We utilize Level AA as a baseline, and aim to achieve AAA when possible. Here are some of the things we do to meet these standards and facilitate utilization with assistive technology:
- Alternative text detail for images
- Semantic HTML, including hierarchical headings
- Appropriate color contrast between content and background color
- ARIA roles to clearly define and label landmarks
- Skip to content navigation options
- Form inputs with labels associated with their controls
- Concise and clear link descriptions
Some of our products do utilize third-party tools, and in these cases, we may not be able to adjust their practices to meet our standards. We encourage anybody experiencing barriers to reach out to us and we will assist in finding a solution.
A note on overlays
You may see a product called an Overlay advertised as a solution to accessibility needs. Overlay companies have marketed their offering as an overarching solution to accessibility, one that “lays over” your existing site. Using fear tactics, they often reach out to site owners with non-specific violations, and promise that their product will shield a business from lawsuits.
Unfortunately, these overlays are not only insufficient to accommodate varying needs, but they introduce additional hurdles. For example, overlays impede the use of assistive technology, which many folks with disabilities rely on to navigate websites. As a result, the community often has to go out of their way to disable the overlay. They may also break existing pieces of the site, creating challenges for all users. At best, an overlay will slow the speed performance of a site.
Ultimately, we choose to avoid overlays, and instead, we ameliorate root causes of accessibility concerns via the practices stated above.
