AI’s Carbon Footprint

December 14, 2022

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is impacting the world in many ways but like any technology, it also has its drawbacks. One negative consequence of AI is its carbon footprint. AI systems require a great deal of energy to run, which can come from a variety of sources including electricity and data centers.

The manufacturing and disposal of AI hardware also have an environmental impact. While the exact carbon footprint of AI is difficult to calculate, some studies have suggested that it could be significant.

To address this issue, researchers are exploring ways to make AI more energy-efficient, such as designing algorithms that require less computational power and finding ways to harness renewable energy sources.

While AI has many positive impacts on the world, it also has a significant carbon footprint that can harm the environment. It is important for both the public and the technology industry to be aware of and address the potential negative consequences of AI.

French Fry Tour of Burlington: The Farmhouse

December 12, 2022

A plastic container filled with french fries. Surrounding the container of fries are four different plastic cups containing dipping sauces: Ketchup, Mayonnaise, Mustard, and an unknown spicy sauce.

The Farmhouse is a relatively fancy restaurant in Burlington surprisingly the location was previously a McDonald's until the Farmhouse opened in 2010. The restaurant is home to their grass-fed Jericho Settlers beef Burgers, craft beer, and farm-to-table dining. A burger is nothing without fries, so we put them to the test!

We were pleasantly surprised by how good these fries were. The fries were cooked to perfection, with a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior. They did taste a bit bland and lacked flavorful seasoning. Although the portion size was small for the high price, the fries came with a variety of delicious dipping sauces that added to our overall experience.

We scored these fries a 6.4 / 10. Check in every Monday for our next local french fry review!

The World’s First Computer Bug

December 07, 2022

A log book. Written primarily in black ink. An insect’s body is on the page. There is tape overtop the insect’s body to preserve the world’s “first computer bug”.

Fun fact!

On September 9, 1947, the world’s first computer bug was recorded. A “Bug” was first coined by Grace Hopper - one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer.

While working on the Mark II in the Harvard Computation Laboratory, Grace, and other operators discovered an error caused by a moth trapped in a relay. Grace removed the moth and taped it to their log book, cementing history as the first “computer bug”.

French Fry Tour of Burlington: Mr. Mike’s

December 05, 2022

Mr. Mike’s calls themselves “the least pretentious joint in the Queen City”. Their staff is very friendly and the ambiance is average. Many people go to Mr. Mike’s for cold beers and delicious pizza, but how do their fries hold up?

We like a good fry that can be eaten by the handful – in other words, fries that are “bunchable.” These fries were a bit short, which helped with their bunch-ability. Additional points for Mr. Mike’s come from their price; they only charge $5.40 for their fries, and you get a hefty amount. However, these fries lack flavor and crispiness which hurt their overall score.

We scored these fries a 6.3 / 10. Check in every Monday for our next local french fry review!
