Yi Yi (2000, dir Edward Yang)

Yi Yi follows each member of a family in Tapei as they go through life’s quandaries and ask hard questions about the meaning of life. The film tackles childhood, love, friendship, family, mundanity, and life in the most simplistic way possible.

Minding the Gap (2018, dir Bing Liu)

“It [skateboarding] hurts you.” “Yeah, but so did my dad…and I loved him to death.”

Minding the Gap is a documentary about three lifelong friends that met while growing up skateboarding, the film focuses on their difficult home lives and the escape they all experience through skateboarding and spending time together.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021, dir Dean Fleischer-Camp)

"Guess what I do for adventure. I hang glide on a Dorito.”

Marcel is a one inch shell that gets separated from his sprawling community of shells. Now living alone with his grandmother Connie, a filmmaker finds Marcel and helps him reunite with his family through a short film.

Tokyo Story (1953, dir Yasujirō Ozu)

“You may be happy while you're still young. But as you become older, you'll find it lonely”.

A mother and father visit their adult children in Tokyo. Both of their children do not have a lot of free time to spend with their aging parents, and so Noriko the widow of their youngest son who was killed in the war keeps her in-laws company

Café Saint-Paul is a Montreal style Cafe located at 194 Saint Paul Street in Burlington, Vermont. They are newer to the local restaurant scene, opening around 2020, they have grown in popularity in Burlington. Their prices are fair compared to other options. Café Saint-Paul works with local dairy suppliers to source the freshest and highest quality offerings.

These fries were extremely delicious, they have a great crispy exterior and they are nice and soft on the inside. The price to fry ratio is also tough for other Burlington based restaurants to compete with. Everyone at Bluehouse Group devoured these fries so quickly.

In 1992 Mike Williams expanded his sandwich shop from a popular food cart on Church Street to a physical location at 155 Main Street in Burlington, Vermont. The sandwich shop is a staple in the Burlington community and they are known for their extensive menu and late hours. Kountry Kart Deli serves over 600 sandwiches a day, but are their french fries good?

This is a pretty solid french fry, especially if you’re into the classic “Hot Dog Stand” style fry that you might find at a baseball game. These fries stand out thanks to their hot, soft center, leaving just enough grease on your fingers to provide great flavor. A spicy cajun seasoning further augments the experience. But the style doesn’t offer much crispiness, and one could argue that the amount of grease leaves a heavier post-eating feel. Still, it’s a worthy contribution to our Fry Tour of Burlington.

With DALL·E 2, copy.ai, and the plethora of AI tools hitting the market, there is one tool in particular that is making us equally cautious and intrigued.

GitHub Copilot is a real-time code suggesting engine that enables code completions built directly into your editor. From short function calls to entire classes, it’s much more than just a spell-checker. The code it suggests is theoretically all available in the public domain, pulled from various open source projects that Copilot was trained on.

In theory this tool is revolutionary for our industry, but it has spurned lawsuits and copyright discussions, not to mention various ethical concerns.

Ethical issues notwithstanding, our team has mixed thoughts on this topic. On one hand, it could save vast amounts of time, on the other, it introduces a lot of code without the immediate need to understand how said code works, potentially making the it harder to maintain. Additionally, Copilot shifts the development process away from writing code, to **reviewing **code, and doesn’t necessarily guarantee a net gain in productivity.

We were approached to partner with an accessibility company that has their own overlay, we said no. Coincidentally, we saw this tweet by @ScopicEngineer the same day we declined the partnership.

Accessibility overlays come with a host of problems, including overriding a user’s customization settings; they do not reliably work, and often create more harm. Instead, accessibility needs to be considered at every stage of a project and baked into the code from the get-go.

If the “easy fix” is too good to be true, it usually is.
