Unexpected Mobile App Success Stories: Waze

January 18, 2023

Waze was founded in 2006 by Ehud Shabtai and started as an open-source project on his balcony in Tel-Aviv, Israel. This is the equivalent of starting a project in a garage in America.

It was initially intended as a tool for commuters to share real-time traffic updates. At the time of its launch, Waze had 22 employees based in Israel and about 2,000 active users. Around this time in 2007, when the first iPhone was released, you needed to jailbreak the iPhone to install any kind of navigation software, by May 2009 anyone with a smartphone could download the Waze app. For many people, it was one of the first apps they ever downloaded.

In 2013, Google acquired the company for an impressive $1 billion. Today, Waze has over 500+ employees and 140 million monthly users who drive 36 billion kilometers per month all around the world. It’s almost crazy to think about how far the company has come since its humble beginnings.

French Fry Tour of Burlington: Ahli Baba’s Kabob Shop

January 09, 2023

A paper plate with a few handfuls of french fries on it

Ahli Baba’s Kabob Shop is a beloved restaurant in Burlington that has been serving delicious food to the community since 1989. Originally starting as a mobile unit on the University of Vermont campus, Ahli Baba’s eventually opened a location on Main Street in the mid-90s. The menu features a variety of dishes, including gyros, steak and chicken kabobs, and, of course, fries.

Ahli Baba’s fries received high praise from the Bluehouse Group team. Despite being somewhat lacking in salt and flavor, the fries impressed with their crispy exterior and soft interior. Additionally, they remained enjoyable even after cooling down, which is not always the case with French fries. Overall, the team gave Ahli Baba’s fries a score of 6.7 out of 10.

Bluehouse Group is hosting our first event of the new year!

If you are passionate about user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, this event is perfect for you – regardless of your level of experience. Twice a month, we will be breaking out into teams to tackle a basic 1-hour design sprint for a local app, website, or even something more obscure like a Burlington public transit map.

Come prepared with your devices and be prepared to wield tools like Figma for crafting design mockups with your team. After the hour is up, each team will present its design to the rest of the group, giving you the opportunity to receive feedback and suggestions from your peers.
